Press Release: Jakarta World Forum for Media Development 2016

Jakarta, 15 September 2016 – Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) in collaboration with Indonesia Press Council and Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), will host World Forum for Media Development (WFMD) on September 20th – 22nd 2016. This forum will be participated by 500 hundred participants such as journalists, academicians, practitioners and media activists from 62 countries. The whole conferences and meetings will be held in Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, Serpong.

By choosing “Decoding the Future : Rethinking Media for a New World” as the main theme, this forum is expected to be a place to share experiences, exchange ideas, find out the latest communication technology and discuss research results. This forum is also directed to offer practical solutions in facing new challenge in media industry, ability to enhance news coverage, access to information and protection of journalists. Furthermore, this forum will discuss media’s role in countering radical group’s hidden agenda, current trend in Asia, also initiate innovations offered by new media.

Leon Willems, Chairman of Global Forum Media for Development revealed that Jakarta is an ideal place to discuss about the newest media. “Beside as the symbol of democratic transition’s success, Jakarta is also known as a city that able to adopt information technology such as social media in a rapid way, to express public’s rights and politic participation. Jakarta is located in the intersection between religions and cultures, and become the center of economic growth from every sectors,” told Leon.

In addition, Head of Indonesia Press Council Yosep Adi Prasetyo explained WFMD in Jakarta is an achievement for Indonesia. This event provides a big forum for journalists, academicians, and media activists in Indonesia to do in depth discussion about Indonesian journalism issues in international scope. “We are hoping we could get a perspective and comparison about media independence, media conglomeration, social media development, the effect of digital technology development and terrorism issues,” said Yosep.

Moreover, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara is honored to become one of the hosts of this international event, as expressed by Rector of Universitas Multimedia Nusantara Dr. Ninok Leksono, Wednesday (14/9). “This event will be held at the right time, when media industry is hit by the tsunami of digital media, traditional media are challenged by digital media, a phenomenon which is companied by the rise of social media and generation Y,” said Ninok.

However, Ninok also revealed, UMN not only expecting Jakarta World Forum would be succeeded and able to make important decisions and recommendation, but also able to expand the network with media figures and international communication experts for UMN’s development. “As the rector, I also encourage civitas academica of UMN, especially Communication Science department, to take an active part in this forum,” said him.

World Forum for Media Development (WFMD) 2016 will invite more than 80 international speakers, 15 of them are Indonesian. Discussion will be divided in to 5 sub-themes : Media in Asia, Extremism, Media and Business, Media Audiences and Technology. (*)
